Four Glover Park bars are allowed to open as early as 7 a.m. during the World Cup, which lasts through July 11.

We’ve already told you about the World Cup strategy of Blue Ridge at 2340 Wisconsin: all games shown live outdoors on the big screen, with food on offer.

Bourbon at 2348 Wisconsin will open at 9:30 a.m. for all USA games and serve the full brunch menu until 4 p.m., with special game-time drink specials, according to its website.

Gin & Tonic at 2408 Wisconsin and Kitchen at 2404 Wisconsin will open early for “select games,” says co-owner Fritz Brogan, with $3 draft beers and $4 rail drinks as well as daily food specials. Signs in the windows of both bars advertise the games on view there.

Meanwhile, Breadsoda at 2233 Wisconsin didn’t register for extended hours, but the basement pub—which usually opens at noon—is already permitted to open at 9 a.m. on Saturdays, 10 a.m. Sundays, and 11 a.m. weekdays, says rep Shawn Kelley. “We will most likely open for games that start one hour before those times,” he says—but anyone wondering whether the bar is open for a game can call 202-333-7445.

FYI, there's a city-owned cut-through at 37th and Tunlaw, but it's blocked off.From the November 2009 Glover Park Gazette:

The Northeast Passage is back, and it smells like pumpernickel. Ever since Glover Park’s two-sided Blockbuster store closed in 2007, thus shutting off a convenient shortcut to the commercial strip, shoppers from 37th Street and beyond have been forced to walk south to W Place or north to Pearson’s and then double back on Wisconsin Avenue—a detour that can add 1/3 of a mile to a round trip.

Now managers at the Bruegger’s Bagels at 2334 Wisconsin, which took over part of the old Blockbuster space, have confirmed that the much-missed shortcut is open again. Staffers don’t object to thru traffic, one manager joked to us, “as long as you say ‘hi’ as you go past.”

From the September 2009 Glover Park Gazette:

The owners of the vacant lot at 2412 Wisconsin, the former site of the burnt-out JP’s Nightclub, are close to obtaining a permit to rebuild the structure, according to project manager Fredrik Starmark of The Construction Guild. The shell—with a raw interior to be finished by its eventual tenants—will feature a two-story glass storefront, Starmark says.

No tenant has yet signed a lease for the future building, but property co-owner Demetra Green (no relation to Tyrone) wrote in an email that the owners are “in discussion with JP’s” to return to the location.
