From the June 2010 edition of the Glover Park Gazette:

¡Finalmente! More than a year after the closing of Margarita’s at 2317 Wisconsin, Mexican food is coming back to the neighborhood, just across the street. Chipotle Mexican Grill has rented 2338 Wisconsin, former site of Pizza Hut, according to landlord Richard Isen. “They anticipate being open for business before the end of the year,” Isen reports.

UPDATE: According to Chipotle spokesperson Chris Arnold, “that restaurant is slated to open in the first quarter of 2011.”

“Moe” better news

From the January 2010 Glover Park Gazette:

A Department of Public Works graffiti-removal squad descended on the commercial strip in mid-November to clear away the large-scale scrawlings of some taggers who had hit the neighborhood one night in late October. The words “Moe,” “Nore,” “Ball$,” and “ATB” were scrubbed from the CVS at 2226 Wisconsin and the old Pizza Hut at 2338 Wisconsin, among other buildings.

The cleanup crew left behind many smaller, scattered tags inflicted by Moe and his pals that same, crazy night, but Petar Dimtchev, the Mayor’s liaison for community relations and services in Ward 3, said he would provide graffiti-removal kits to affected property owners.
Dimtchev invited citizens with graffiti or blight concerns to call the Ward 3 Help Desk at 202-671-2337 or to contact him at petar.dimtchev@dc.gov or Drew Del Junco, outreach and service specialist for Ward 3, at andrew.deljunco@dc.gov.

From the December 2009 Glover Park Gazette:

We’ve been tagged. In late October, some graffiti-doers scrawled “MOE,” “NORE,” “BALL$,” and “ATB” on several buildings on the strip, including CVS at 2226 Wisconsin, the ex-Pizza Hut at 2338 Wisconsin, Glover Park Market at 2411 37th Street, and, cruelly, Rocklands’s “Eat Your Barbeque” mural at 2424 37th Street.

The graffiti does not appear to be gang-related, according to Daniel Hickson, the director of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Intelligence Branch. Rather, it seems to be the work of—or an homage to—a group of prolific taggers called the ATB Crew. Nore was described a “king” of DC graffiti in Clout magazine, and Moe “bombs hard” (i.e., tags a lot) according to an online graffiti discussion board. We couldn’t find any information online about Ball$, but given his nom de crime, he must be very wealthy and courageous indeed.

A citizen reported the graffiti at CVS and Starbucks to the city for removal on November 1, but it had not yet been removed three weeks later—perhaps because the government needs waivers from property owners before taking action. (UPDATE: A DPW team did remove major graffiti from the CVS garage door, the ex Pizza Hut, and other sites on November 16, though smaller tags remained.)

Property owners who want graffiti removed should call 311 directly. [Do-it-yourselfers can try acetone or nail polish remover, though that may also remove any underlying finish.]

From the November 2009 Glover Park Gazette:

The Pizza Hut delivery store at 2338 Wisconsin closed in mid-September, but Mike Isen, a representative of the building’s owner, says he is “hopeful we’ll have something signed with a new tenant by the end of the year.” The owner is actively marketing the property to both food service and retail companies, Isen says.

The Pizza Hut had been at that location since 1993, but the franchise was purchased three years ago by a new franchisee, ADF Companies. Harry Harnett, the CEO of ADF, blamed the soft economy for the store’s loss. The shop “historically was a marginal asset,” he wrote in an email. “In these tough economic times, all of our restaurants have to make money.”

Farewell, My Cheesy
The Pizza Hut delivery hutch at 2338 Wisconsin is now closed and papered over. This storefront is owned by the same landlord as Bruegger’s Bagels and the Salvadoran consulate. I’ll be curious to see what goes into this tiny, be-ovened rental space.
