Balance Gym (2121 Wisconsin Ave.) is undergoing a renovation that will enlarge the gym’s weight training area, add a group exercise studio, and double the size of the space devoted to CrossFit Glover Park. The redo will also add indoor access to the gym’s lower-level workout area, which is now accessible only from outdoors. Space for the renovation will come from taking over two vacant office spaces.

The construction is expected to last for two months, but club management anticipates minimal disruption for members during that time. “Most of the work will be completed on our newly acquired space, with very little impact on the existing club during construction,” explains CrossFit director Emily Baskin.

From the February 2011 edition of the Glover Park Gazette:

According to the Washington Post, real estate investment firm The JBG Companies is negotiating to buy two “choice” Glover Park buildings from developer ICG Properties, which owns office complexes at 2115 Wisconsin Ave. and 2121 Wisconsin Ave.

At 2115 Wisconsin Ave.—which is 99% leased, according to ICG principal Stylianos Christofides—tenants include Fannie Mae, Georgetown University, and MedStar Health. Tenants at 2121 Wisconsin Ave. include Balance Gym, SomaSpa, and WBDC-TV. The purchases would be part of a post-recession “buying spree” for the powerful JBG firm, according to the Post. “They are the gorilla in Washington, there’s no question about it,” one former JBG leasing agent told the paper.

Balance Gym’s marketing annex at 2241 Wisconsin is up and running: running straight for members of Washington Sports Club next door at 2251 Wisconsin. Though Balance owner Graham King had told us the new storefront would be used to promote spa services—”(massages/facials/sauna/steam/etc)”—at SomaSpa, which shares Balance’s 2121 Wisconsin location, a Balance tout spent this morning handing out cards flogging the gym’s new membership deal: $59/month if you sign up by June 30. (There’s also a onetime initiation fee of $99, but it’s credited towards personal training or spa services.)

Meanwhile, a whiteboard in WSC’s lobby announces discounts that gym has negotiated for its members with local merchants. With your WSC member barcode, you’ll get the following deals:

  • 15% off meals at Kavanagh’s at 2400 Wisconsin;
  • 50% off games and 10% off food and drink at Breadsoda at 2233 Wisconsin;
  • 15% off services at Hair Lounge at 2201 Wisconsin;
  • 15% off hair services on your first visit to Elite for Hair at 2315 Wisconsin; and
  • $6.45 games and free shoes on Tuesdays at Strike Bowling Alley at 5353 Westbard Avenue in Bethesda.

Will the neighborhood’s other gyms, BodySmith at 2200 Wisconsin and Elements Fitness & Wellness Center inside 2233 Wisconsin, leap into the fray?
