Slate Wine Bar & Bistro (2404 Wisconsin Ave.) unveiled a new menu during their anniversary week in late August. Restaurateur Danny Lledó designed the new roster, which includes small plates such as blistered shishito peppers and duck breast egg rolls; entrees including eggplant parmesan and pan-seared salmon barigoule; and three- or five-course tasting menus. The restaurant’s brunch menu has also been revamped, but don’t worry: the Slate burger with applewood bacon still appears on both menus.

Slate Wine Bar & Bistro (2404 Wisconsin Ave.) will help Glover Parkers prepare for the July 4 holiday by offering free mussels and drink specials on July 1, 2, and 3. The event, called the Slate Summer Festival, is intended as a neighborhood get-together, says event coordinator Ashley Lovelace. “We wanted to catch people before they go away for the long weekend,” she adds.

House wines will cost $5 per glass and select beers will cost $3 during the festival, which lasts from 5 to 8 p.m. on each of the three nights. Along with the free mussels, a selection of other appetizers will be available at prices of $4 to $9.

And as a reminder, every Wednesday is “Wine Wednesday” at Slate. With any wine that is sold by the glass at the restaurant, you can buy two full bottles for the price of one on Wednesdays.

Slate Wine Bar & Bistro’s new chef, Kerry Brian Tate, came in with a bang. Just two weeks into the job at 2404 Wisconsin Ave., Tate has unveiled a tantalizing new menu featuring “mini-plates” such as pan-roasted shishito peppers, entrees including New York strip steak with green peppercorn sauce, and an assortment of soups and desserts.

“It’s a collaboration of fresh, local seasonal foods that I like to prepare and that I like to eat,” Tate tells us. “I try to make it hard for people to order—I want them to want everything on the menu.”

Tate, a Penn Quarter resident, got his culinary training in the California wine country and the high desert of Nevada. He moved to D.C. last year and has been working as a restaurant consultant and caterer. Tate’s plans for Slate include regular Sunday afternoon “socials” where the white tablecloths come off and patrons enjoy inexpensive food and a sampling of wines in a relaxed atmosphere. “We just really want to be a part of Glover Park,” he says.

To mark Tate’s arrival, Slate has partnered with LivingSocial to offer a $15-off meal deal: pay $15 and get a coupon worth $30 in food and drink.

deviled eggOn March 23 from 1 to 3 p.m., five Glover Park chefs will go huevo a huevo for the title of best deviled-egg maker in the neighborhood. Whole Foods Market (2323 Wisconsin Ave.) is hosting the contest, in which shoppers will sample the contenders and vote for their favorite. Chefs from Mayfair & Pine (2218 Wisconsin Ave.), Slate Wine Bar & Bistro (2404 Wisconsin Ave.), Bourbon (2348 Wisconsin Ave.), and Breadsoda (2233 Wisconsin Ave.) will compete with a Whole Foods staffer for top honors.

UPDATE: Mayfair & Pine and Breadsoda dropped out of the contest, and Whole Foods staffers submitted two different entries. The winner was a smoked salmon deviled egg from the Whole Foods seafood team.
